Chelsea Football Club have been given a 16 month transfer ban for tapping up players.
Basically this means approaching them personally without involving the players club which is supposed to be illegal but until Chelsea got the ban it was merely slap on the wrist fines.
I was wondering if this happens in the US with sports as I am not sure if you buy and sell players in US sports or draft them all.

It does happen like when teams either go after a draft prospect before draft day or when someone is up for free agency/trade whatever, if they have any contact before a certain deadline they get fined for tampering with them as they are trying to get unfair advantage over other teams and what not. The only time they ban players here are for drug violations, criminal records(I.E. Vick), etc. The lengths of those bans depend on the seriousness of the offenses, some guys gut 5 to 10 games or a whole year. Baseball has 50 games then 100 games then a year ban for each offense.
